RUGBY KNIT

Our hand knits are produced in a small, women run cooperative in Almora, nestled in the hills of Uttarakhand. What began as a modest, part time endeavor, something women could do alongside farming and household work, has gradually grown into a steady source of livelihood for many knitters in the region. Working largely by hand, often on traditional needles, they draw from a local ecosystem of materials, sometimes sourcing wool directly from nearby sheep and spinning it into what is known as Desi Oon. Alongside this, they work with fibers such as Kala Cotton, Merino Wool, Eri Silk, Hemp Fiber, and Jute Fiber. Many of the yarns are dyed locally using an evolving palette of natural dyes developed within the cooperative itself, giving each knit its own quiet irregularity. Because knitting can be done throughout the year, the work provides a seasonless source of employment for local women, offering flexibility and financial independence while preserving a deeply tactile, hand led craft tradition.
